DSEC Co., LTD., a subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), has contracted with General Dynamics NASSCO of San Diego, California to supply the design and equipment package for the world’s best energy efficient ECO MR Tanker, to be operated by American Petroleum Tanker (APT). The contract is for four vessels, with options for four additional vessels. The ECO MR tankers represent the continuation of DSEC’s successful partnership with NASSCO, which was a partner on the five APT State-class product tankers in 2006 and currently is contributing to two 3,100TEU LNG-powered containerships for TOTE Shipholdings.“We are very proud that this project will develop the new market in green ship technology, and I believe this is a great opportunity to introduce total solutions for ship owners seeking economical and environment-friendly ships,” said Young-Man Lee, President and CEO of DSEC. “We are going to continue to spur the development of new technology.”DSEC will begin the engineering of these50,000 deadweight ton immediately with the first vessel expected to be delivered by NASSCO by the fourth quarter 2015.Thetankers are LNG conversion-ready product carriers with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity.DSEC’s ECO design achieves improved fuel efficiency through several features, including a G-series MAN ME slow-speed main engine and an optimized hull form. The tankers will have dual-fuel-capable auxiliary engines and the ability to accommodate future installation of an LNG fuel-gas system.By designing LNG conversion ready vessel, it provides options to customers to easily convert as LNG powered tanker based on the market trends.DSEC has also supplied engineering and equipment packages to shipyards around the globe, including DMHI in Romania, ODC in Oman, and SASEBO in Japan. DSEC also plans to launch its newly developed LR1 tanker design with improved fuel efficiency and a hybrid fuel system depending on owners’ demands.Continuing the market-leading approach of LNG-as-fuel concept, DSEC has recently introduced the Floating LNG Power Plant (FLPPTM). FLPPTM combines all the functions of electric generator, LNG storage farm, LNG receiving terminal, LNG vaporizer, and transmission tower on a single barge. DSEC explains that FLPPTM 200MW-class model is ready for commercialization, while 400MW- and 800MW-class models, currently in development, will be introduced by third or fourth quarter of this year.
